We have a certain amount of stock that is not moving.
So what do you do with it? I've know yarn stores to put it on sale, donate it to a good cause, Make patterns just for it, or remove it to the personal stash. I've know crafters who dye it, or turn it into something and sell the finished product. I suppose we can sell it on e bay or craigslist cheap. This is the biggest problem as an LYSO. Having dogs in your store(ie: stuff that doesn't sell.)
We have blog posts about what to do with them here, but as an LYS it's a bit different. One of the things I've noticed is that light colored yarns don't sell. Anything in what could be considered baby or little girl colors. So we over dye some of the yarns and fibers. If the Yarns are too rough, or the yardage isn't great, it won't go either. So as an LYS what do you do with a dog?
We want to bring in new inventory, new fibers and yarns. More luxury goods that will carry a higher pricetag but seems to go better. Do we order this color or that color based on what goes? Well common sense says yes. But we are looking at a large expense in things like cashmere, camel down, silk and merino blends, new fibers like tencel and bamboo, superfine merino, and finer softer corriedale. Even some alpaca silk blends.
I get excited when I look at the catalog and hope that you all will get excited with me. I think some of the old stock will go into my personal stash, and some of it will stay.( I need a new sweater anyway!) We will take the risk on the new fibers, and pray they will be what lots of people were waiting for.
